Donald Trump’s Strategy Is Now Clear: It’s You and Me Against the World
“I just think it’s an embarrassment, quite frankly … At the end of the day, you know, it’s all going to come to fruition on Jan. 20.”
— Joe Biden
These are the words that Joe Biden pronounced on Tuesday, November 10, 2020, to describe the situation in which Donald Trump and his camp are currently plunging the United States.
While Joe Biden was declared the winner of the presidential election on November 7, 2020, Donald Trump still refuses to concede defeat.
The first few hours that followed gave the impression that Donald Trump was in clear denial of defeat. I had the feeling that he was mostly psychologically incapable of admitting that he was part of what he calls the losers.
Donald Trump’s current attitude is highly strategic
And then, as the hours went by, I got the feeling that Donald Trump knew what he was doing very well. Donald Trump has understood perfectly well that he will not be able to return the result of this presidential election of 2020.
Donald Trump’s fans will jump out at me when they read this, and they’ll probably take me back to some of his tweets that are supposed to prove that Donald Trump is convinced that he’s going to win:
Donald Trump wants to give the impression to everyone, and especially his loyal fan base, that they will win at the end of this legal battle in which he and his team are engaged.
The “We” is essential here to understand what Donald Trump and his camp are trying to do.
Donald Trump wants to capitalize on the popularity of Trumpism
Donald Trump has finally quickly moved beyond the stage of disappointment and denial of defeat. Most importantly, he found that he had won nearly 72 million votes. Almost half of America voted for him. That’s huge considering all the excesses he had made during his four years as president.
So President Trump understood that his ideas, Trumpism, are still extremely popular in the United States. Trumpism will outlast the defeat of Donald Trump.
If behind Donald Trump, a whole bunch of ambitious Republican Senators is already ready to take his place, and his son Donald Trump Jr. is also thinking about it, Donald Trump is not ready to leave his place.
Donald Trump has profoundly changed American politics in the last 4 years, and he intends to take his revenge in 4 years. The more the hours go by, the more it seems that Donald Trump is starting to prepare for the 2024 presidential election.
It seems far away, and it is, but it is now the goal of Donald Trump.
The 2024 presidential election will become Donald Trump’s new goal
In 2024, Donald Trump will be 78 years old. It may seem too old to be elected President of the United States, but the election of Joe Biden this year showed that Americans see nothing wrong with electing a 78-year-old man as President of the United States.
To achieve his goal, Donald Trump must continue to weigh in for the next 4 years.
Donald Trump must therefore absolutely keep his base loyal and united around him. By conceding his defeat quickly, Donald Trump would have disappointed the majority of his supporters.
For months Donald Trump has been preparing them by telling them that the election will be stolen from them. Now that he has lost, all of Trump’s supporters would be extremely disappointed if their much-admired leader were to concede his defeat to Joe Biden.
So Donald Trump is playing a role: that of the victim whose election was stolen. It is not simply his victory that was stolen by massive fraud by Democrats, which he cannot prove, it is their election.
As I said before, the “We” is essential.
Donald Trump wants to make his base feel that he is not fighting just for him, but them. Donald Trump’s strategy is clear: it’s you and me against the world. That world is the Democrats and the elites, who don’t want Donald Trump and his supporters to win this election.
The GOP is in a difficult position regarding Donald Trump’s current attitude
Within the GOP, the situation is largely one of wait-and-see. Many don’t understand Trump’s stubbornness, but none really want to risk alienating the all-powerful Republican leader.
Republican voters overwhelmingly support Donald Trump as we have seen. The Republican Senators who officially recognized Joe Biden’s victory, therefore, took a major risk. Their courage is to be commended.
They are Susan Collins (Maine), Mitt Romney (Utah), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), and Ben Sasse (Nebraska).
Among the most influential, the strategy I am talking about is coming to light. As Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell is the top Republican in Congress. Had he remained silent over the weekend, he finally gave his support to Donald Trump on Monday, November 9, 2020.
For Mitch McConnell, the announcement of Joe Biden’s victory is premature:
“President Trump is 100 percent within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities and weigh his legal options. Let’s not have any lectures about how the president should immediately, cheerfully accept preliminary election results from the same characters who just spent four years refusing to accept the validity of the last election.”
The democratic process, which includes the possibility of appeal, must continue to take its course.
Mitch McConnell and William Barr take action for Donald Trump
Mitch McConnell will support Donald Trump as long as he remains within the law. He’s still there now since he is under no legal obligation to concede defeat to Joe Biden. Furthermore, Donald Trump’s requests for recounts in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Nevada are completely legal.
But that takes money. Donation campaigns have been launched to finance the recounts requested by camp Trump in these states.
Besides, there are numerous complaints filed by Camp Trump. Even if Donald Trump cannot provide any proof of the massive frauds and irregularities that he denounces, he is within his rights in filing these complaints.
In addition to these recounts and announcements of multiple complaints, William Barr has recently asked prosecutors to investigate irregularities committed during the vote even though there is a glaring lack of evidence.
As Attorney General of the United States within the Trump administration, William Barr comes to support Donald Trump in his harmful move for American democracy. In the eyes of the whole world, Donald Trump looks like a bad loser who refuses to admit defeat.
Emily Murphy blocks the start of the power transition process
The United States is entering the second wave of coronavirus. Joe Biden’s teams would like to be able to start working on the transition between the two administrations as soon as possible. The administrator of the General Services Administration has refused to sign the letter formalizing the transition of power.
Usually, this letter is signed soon after the results are announced by the major American media. However, Emily Murphy still refuses to sign the letter that would allow the transition of power to start.
Appointed in 2017 by Donald Trump, Emily Murphy is a faithful follower of Donald Trump. If she signed this letter, it would be like officially acknowledging Joe Biden’s victory, and thus Donald Trump’s defeat. Of that, it is out of the question for the moment.
Donald Trump must give the feeling to his base that the election has been stolen. Conceding his defeat would be tantamount to accepting it and thus legitimizing it. Donald Trump would risk losing the unconditional support of his base. If Donald Trump wants to be able to take his revenge in 2024, he cannot afford that.
For the Trump administration, there is officially “no clear winner”, so one must remain cautious.
Everything must be done to maintain the illusion that Donald Trump did not lose in an honest way
Caution was out of the question on November 10, 2020, when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo intervened. Asked about the transition with the teams of President-elect Joe Biden, and the importance that this transition is as smooth as possible in the interest of the United States, Mike Pompeo answered this with a smile:
“There will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration.”
Some think it was humorous, but for many, such comments are irresponsible, as they maintain an illusion, and contribute to spreading false information that Donald Trump was stolen during this presidential election.
The peaceful transition has always been a cornerstone of American democracy. Seeing Mike Pompeo speak such words is all the more dangerous because, in his position, he is supposed to lecture countries whose outgoing head of state refuses to respect the results of the ballot box.
In fact, the State Department had refused to organize telephone conversations between the leaders of the allied countries and the new President-elect Joe Biden.
These calls did take place, but without going through the American diplomatic services.
Everything that’s going on right now shows you once again that Donald Trump doesn’t want to do anything like everyone else. The days ahead are just as uncertain, and you can expect Donald Trump and his teams to continue this “You and Me Against the World” strategy.
The goal of this strategy is becoming increasingly clear: to keep Donald Trump’s base loyal and united around him to allow him to influence American politics over the next four years.
The ultimate goal, of course, is that Donald Trump will be able to take revenge, in the 2024 presidential election, on those who allegedly stole from him and his supporters in the 2020 presidential election.
